Feb 12, 2015 xda-developers Motorola Moto E Moto E General [ROOT-FLASHABLE] Lollipop [UPDATE] by ur0 XDA Developers was founded by developers, for developers. It is now a valuable resource for people who want to make the most of their mobile devices, from customizing the look and feel to adding new functionality.
Announced in May last year, the Moto E is one of the most impressive budget Android smartphones to have been released yet. Recently Motorola introduced the second generation Moto E model, with a few slight hardware changes that make the device an even more convincing package overall. Even though the older model may not find much love from consumers now, the device does continue to be extremely popular among the XDA developer community. Moto E received an Android 5.1 Lollipop based custom ROM soon after the Android 5.1 version was released by Google. Now that the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop version is out, the Moto E has received an Android 5.1.1 based ROM courtesy of XDA senior member percy_g2. The AOSP ROM for the Moto E is based on the Android Open Source Project and will give you a completely stock Android 5.1.1 Lollipop experience.
The pure AOSP build doesn’t include any additional features or mods that a lot of other custom ROMs offer. The ROM works on both the single-SIM and dual-SIM variants of the Moto E. While the ROM doesn’t have any major bugs for the single-SIM variant, the dual-SIM variant does have an issue with the RIL. This means you will not be able to make or receive calls when using this ROM on your dual-SIM Moto E. The bug should be fixed in a future version of the ROM, so if you own the dual-SIM Moto E variant, it probably makes sense to wait until the RIL bug has been fixed completely. You can still install the ROM on your device if you are curious to find out the difference between Android 5.1 and 5.1.1 Lollipop. If you own the single-SIM variant though, there are no reasons to stop yourself from trying out this pure AOSP ROM on your Moto E. Users have reported that the ROM works really well and some even believe that the AOSP ROM for Moto E is smoother than the CM12 and CM12.1 ROMs available for the device. You should be able to use this ROM as your daily driver as almost everything works and the overall performance is also quite impressive. The ROM is currently in testing phase, so the overall experience could improve even further once the developer spends more time refining the ROM and optimizing it even further.
In this tutorial I am going to walk you through all the steps involved in flashing this AOSP ROM on your Motorola Moto E. It is recommend that you follow the below guide carefully and do not skip any step or do anything differently based on your judgment as you may end up bricking your device. Fixing a soft brick may not be the simplest thing to do for most users, especially those with little to no prior experiencing dealing with soft bricks or installing custom ROMs and mods on your Android smartphone or tablet.
Before we get to the ROM installation process, I am going to discuss all the pre-requisites that need to be met before you will be able to install this custom ROM on your Moto E. The very first thing that you will need to do is to take a backup of all your data. This includes all your personal data, SMS, Contacts, as well as the apps that you have installed on your smartphone. To take a backup of all your data, you can use a third party backup and restore app from the Google Play Store or you can back up all your data to your computer using Windows software that lets you back up your Android smartphone to the computer. If you choose to go with an app to take a backup of your data, you can choose any of the popular backup and restore apps available such as Titanium Backup, Helium or MyBackup. Along with the backup of your data, you will also need to take a Nandroid backup of your current ROM so you can easily revert to your current ROM in case you find yourself to be dissatisfied with the AOSP ROM for Moto E. If you have not performed a Nandroid backup earlier, you follow our guide on taking a Nandroid backup on your device at this link.
Since this ROM is based on AOSP, the ROM can be installed on your device only if you have an unlocked bootloader. Unlocking your bootloader means that you will void the warranty on your device. So you will need to keep this in mind before you decide whether or not you want to unlock the bootloader of your Moto E. Since the Moto E 2nd Gen has gone on sale only recently, most of you Moto E owners will likely have a few months of warranty left. Apart from an unlocked bootloader, you will also need to have a custom recovery installed on your Motorola Moto E and make sure that you have root access as well. A custom recovery is required as you will need to flash the ROM via custom recovery in order to install it on your device. If you already have a custom recovery installed on your device, you can stick to it. Otherwise, you will have to choose from the popular custom recovery options such as CWM, TWRP or PhilZ recovery.
Whenever you install a new custom ROM on your Android smartphone or tablet, it is extremely important to make sure that you check if your device has at least around 60% battery charge remaining. In case the battery runs out before the installation process can be completed, you will end up bricking your device. So make sure that you charge your Moto E first before you install the ROM in case it is running low on battery.
Lastly, you will have to make sure that the USB Debugging option should be checked under Developer Options. For this, go to Settings – Developer Options – USB Debugging and see if the option has been checked. If it is not checked already, make sure that you check the option before proceeding to the installation process.
Now that all the pre-installation requirements have been taken care of, we can finally proceed to the installation process.

That’s it. You should now have the AOSP Android 5.1.1 Lollipop ROM running on your Moto E. The first boot will take quite long, so do not panic if your Moto E takes a few minutes to boot to the homescreen. It is perfectly normal.
In case you wish to report any bugs that you may find after installing this ROM on your Moto E, or for any other discussion related to this ROM, you can follow the official ROM thread on XDA at this link

I'm about to buy and oldie - first generation of Motorola Moto E (XT1021) and everywhere I look it says it works on KitKat (4.4) but I've seen some posts about (oficially - OTA) updating it to 5.1.1.
I don't want to root or do some weird magic, so my question is:
Thanks a lot!
